Think of the Maldives and most will imagine crystal clear turquoise water, white sandy beaches, delightful sunrays and swaying palm trees. Indeed, most people see the Maldives as a paradise island befitting for a honeymoon or once-in-a-lifetime vacation spot. If you’re heading to the Maldives soon, you may be wondering what to pack along in excitement.

Here’s a comprehensive guide to what you should bring along, including essentials, what to wear and what not to bring to the Maldives:

1. Essentials

No holiday can go smoothly without packing your travel essentials. Before you come over and explore these paradise islands, make sure you have all these items ready in your bag!

Travel insurance: If you don’t already have coverage, it is always a good idea to purchase travel insurance to ensure you are covered in case of emergencies.

Visa: The Maldives is a visa-free country so anyone can enter and will be issued thirty days of free visa upon entry!

Power adaptor: The Maldives uses Type G power outlets like those used in the UK. While some hotels may have international plugs, do bring along a universal travel adapter for ease of charging your many devices.

Cash and cards: Since the Maldives is a resort island, most places will accept credit cards. However, if you are thinking of doing a lot of exploration in Male and visiting smaller shops, you might want to bring some cash along. Small notes are also great for tipping. You can also withdraw from the ATMs here but be sure to notify your bank if you’d like to withdraw money overseas.

A dry bag: If you’re planning on doing a lot of water sports here so be sure to bring along a dry bag to store all your little essentials like cards and electronics! A dry bag is also very useful for short excursions to snorkelling or diving spots, which you will definitely be thankful for.

Sunglasses and sunscreen: The weather here is warm and the sun can be scorching hot, so don’t forget to bring along a good sunscreen to protect your skin from the UV rays. As you will most definitely be spending a lot of your time outdoors either relaxing at the beach, doing water sports or just strolling around, it is also a good idea to bring a sunhat along for the protection and chic factor!

Medicine: It is always a good idea to bring a pack of essential medicine just in case, so pack along some paracetamol, flu medicine, diarrhea pills and medicine for other allergies or health conditions that you may have!

2. Clothing

The tropical weather in the Maldives means it will be warm the whole time you are here, but don’t forget that this is also a fairly conservative country, so do pack along:

Cover ups: A light cover up like a scarf or cardigan is great for the flight there but also since you will be landing in Male Airport, it is only respectful to the locals who are mostly Muslims. A large scarf can also double up as picnic mats for the beach so it is a definite must-pack for your trip!

Beachwear: A no-brainer for anyone heading to the Maldives. Bring along a few sets of swimwear and some beachwear for the many swimming and water sports activities that you will be doing.

A smart casual/dressy outfit: There are many nice restaurants here that you will most definitely want to dine in so bring along a nice outfit or two like a light maxi dress or linen shirt and long pants.

3. Nice to Have

These items aren’t must-haves in your packing list but are definitely nice to have to keep yourself comfortable and entertained on your trip!

Insect repellent: As the Maldives is a tropical island, be prepared to face some critty insects here. Bring a small spray bottle with you so you’re not scratching yourself from insect bites the entire trip!

Book/Kindle: If you’re planning to spend a lot of time at the beach lounging, do bring some reading materials with you for a guaranteed relaxing time.

4. What NOT to bring

We may have an idea of all the things that’ll make our holiday perfect, but always note the local rules and regulations so that you don’t break any laws!

Alcohol: It’s illegal to bring alcohol into the Maldives, but don’t fret! Whichever resort you will be will most likely have a large selection of drinks, so you won’t miss out on all the drinking fun.

Items contrary to Islam: As the Maldives is an Islamic island nation, you can’t bring other religious items like the Bible or any pork products.

Other prohibited items like drugs, weapons, and explosives.

Don’t worry if you missed out some of these items as guests at either of our resorts, Club Med Kani, Maldives or Finolhu Villas, can be rest assured that our staff will assist you with whatever you need.

Most importantly, we also provide a GoPro for excursions that will be invaluable in capturing memories of you and your loved ones for your trip in the Maldives, so do make use of that too!
