The top 10 best ski resorts in the world based on amount of snowfall, according to the data

1.Whistler Blackcomb is the best ski resort for snowfall and ski experience in the world

The index found that Whistler Blackcomb nestled in Canada is the best ski Resort in the world with a perfect score of 100 out of 100 - the ultimate resort for snowsport lovers!

Out of all ski resorts analysed, Whistler Blackcomb had one of the highest volume of predicted snowfall days with an estimated 83 days per year, ranking just behind Big White, another ski resort in Canada. Whistler Blackcomb also had a whopping 840.7cm, or 27.60 feet, of predicted snowfall across 2021 and 2022 - perfect for a picturesque ski trip.

Even though snowfall is at the forefront of any skiers and snowboarder's mind - so is the experience. Whistler Blackcomb resort has a 4.7 star rating, one of the highest star ratings out of all of the ski resorts analysed. Google search volume data also found that this resort received a massive 60,500 monthly searches - proving to be a highly popular resort for prospective skiers.

2.Matterhorn in Switzerland has the world’s second-best ski resort experience

One of the world’s most recognisable peaks, the Matterhorn in Switzerland, takes second place with an index score of 94 out of a possible 100. This resort also had the highest monthly search volume out of all ski resorts analysed - an irresistible resort for adrenaline seekers.

The Swiss destination has a whopping 301,000 monthly searches on average, one of many factors contributing to the Matterhorn ranking as the second best resort in the world.

The Matterhorn slopes boast 52 ski lifts allowing skiers to fully explore the snowy slopes. It’s also an affordable option, with an average lift pass costing around £62 (₣77) Our index also found Matterhorn had a whopping 426cm (14 foot) of predicted snowfall based on historical data from weather stations gathered over the last 8 years. 3.Alpe d'Huez ski resort is a incredible for snowfall and ski experience, with a 4.2 star rating

The study found that Alpe d’Huez, in the Oisans region of the French Alps, is the third best ski resort worldwide with a score of 94 out of 100.

France has some of the best chalets to choose from within walking distance to this popular resort. ‘Les Chalets de l'Altiport’ is a great example, located only 650m from Alpe d’Huez, 1.4km to the city center and to top it off, a great view of the snowy slopes from your window!

Aside from it’s dazzling reputation for having some of the most days of sunshine, this beautiful resort is also predicted to have 429cm (14 foot) worth of snowfall, according to years of collated weather data. Additionally, Alpe d’Huez is predicted to have 32cm of snowfall per month and 35 predicted snowfall days - fulfilling all of your skiing and snowboarding needsneeds.

Along with snowfall, Alpe d’Huez had one of the cheapest ski pass costs out of all ski resorts analysed at around £40 (€48) - reducing those pricey added expenses on your trip. The top 20 ski resorts in the world for snowfall

Looking for a winter wonderland but not sure where to start? When researching the best places for a ski holiday one of the key factors to dig into is predicted snowfall. It may be obvious but snowsports require snow! So to make sure you’re truly getting the most for your money, you need to make sure you can successfully do the activities you’re signing up for.

According to our data, Canada is the best country in the world for volume of snowfall, with 13 ski resorts placing in the top 20 ranking for most days of snowfall! Examples of Canada’s finest with a great volume of predicted snowfall days include ‘Silver Star ski mountain resort’ (78 days) and ‘Sun Peaks’ (75 days).

USA and Norway were among other countries with ski resorts featured in the top 20 resorts with the highest volume of predicted snowfall days. USA had a total of 6 resorts making the cut, with the likes of ‘Winter Park Resort’ in the USA (77 days and ‘Keystone’ in the USA, with 68 days to name a few.

Myrkdalen ski resort in Norway ranked in 14th and was also predicted to have 68 days of snowfall. This is the largest ski resort in Western Norway and scored 68, proving to be great for ski experience as well as snowfall.

Canada, Stoneham is the best resort in the world for volume of snowfall

Globally, the rise in global snowfall has increased by nearly 3% over the last four decades and when analysing ski resorts around the world, Stoneham takes the top spot. The Canadian ski resort is estimated to see 130 predicted snowfall days in 2021/22 - storming the leader board.
Both Sunshine Village and Big White in Canada, rank behind Stoneham as the next ski resorts with the highest predicted number of snowfall days in 2021/22. Sunshine Village had 100 predicted snowfall days and a whopping 625cm of estimated snowfall to look forward to this season, based on the average ski resorts snowfall over the last 8 years. Proving this resort earns a place in the top 3 for snowfall!
Big White, rounds off the top 3 ranking, with 87 predicted snowfall days in 2021/22 and a whopping 724cm of estimated snowfall forecast.

This index looks at the top 50 ski resorts around the world (where data was available*). The index is made up of 8 different metrics that cover aspects of an 'snowfall and ski Experience’'. The metrics analysed were:

  • Predicted snowfall 2021/22 (CM) (based on the average ski resort snowfall over the last 8 years)
  • Volume of predicted snowfall days 2021/22 (CM)
  • Star rating of ski pass cost
  • Average ski pass cost
  • Number of ski lifts per ski resort
  • Monthly Google search demand
  • Google search trend increase or decrease (%)
  • Snowfall per month (CM)

These index scores were then added together to give a total index score out of 100 and therefore indicate which ski Resort was the best for snowfall and ski experience.
