A holiday in the Caribbean is a virtual guarantee of glorious sun, sea and sand. Choose any island and you’re unlikely to be disappointed with the paradise that awaits. However, when you travel with a family your needs are often different and you may be looking for activities other than sunbathing that will keep energetic kids happy or slightly sulky teenagers occupied. Here’s our guide to the best places to go with the family in this wonderful region.

Jamaica

The perfect island to get your groove back, Jamaica offers a very welcoming culture for the entire family. Take a trip to Golden Eye, the home of James Bond author Ian Fleming. The upcoming Bond movie No Time to Die features Jamaican locations so you can all pretend to be part of the story. How about swimming with dolphins in their natural environment? The parks at Ocho Rios and Montego Bay allow you to spend time in the water with these family favourite creatures.

Dominican Republic

If you stay at our Club Med Punta Cana resort then we can take care of everything, providing the kids with a range of entertainment from circus skills to music lessons. But further afield there are kayaking adventures, mountains to climb, zip lines through rain forests and merengue dancing lessons to keep kids and adults occupied nearby our brand new Club Med Michès. The Dominican Republic] (/d/The-Caribbean/Dominican-Republic) has it all.

Turks and Caicos

Turks and Caicos are part of a network of islands that are very family-friendly with safe swimming, very little crime to worry about and lots of activities based around nature. Head for Grace Bay Beach and three miles of perhaps the best beaches in the Carribean. Alternatively, why not visit the world’s only conch farm where you can see how these beautiful sea snails create their amazing shells? There’s also an iguana safari for the young ones who love their lizards.

Cayman Islands

This financial haven also offers a pristine beach, a low crime rate, and modern roads so you can explore on your own. If your teens are into scuba diving then there over 300 dive sites for them to enjoy. At Stingray City, they can swim with a friendly group of these graceful fish. If they don’t fancy getting wet then they can dive to up to 100 feet with a submarine tour – it’s amazing what you can see through the windows. Teens may fancy a few hours at Black Pearl Skate, one of the largest of its kind in the world, with half-pipes and bowls to cater for every ability.

Puerto Rico

The unique Puerto Rican culture will offer some great shared moments with everything from old forts to rainforests offering day trips everyone will love. For nature lovers, try horseback riding through El Yunque National Forest. Old San Juan is a must visit offering history, art and music all in one place. The Museo del Niño (Children's Museum) in Carolina, about 20-minutes outside of San Juan, will eat up the hours, providing entertainment and learning for your little ones.

Saint Lucia

This stunning island has plenty to do away from the beach. The chocolate is world-renowned and you can learn how to make it (and, of course, eat it) at several family-friendly chocolate laboratories. You also need to visit the famous Soufriere Volcano where the family can take a fun dip in the warm mud baths. The older kids will love the open-air dune buggy tour around the island where they can see the sites while enjoying the thrill of speed in the outdoors.

The Bahamas makes things easy with its family-friendly resorts and endless beaches. For something different, try the island of Staniel Cay and the world-famous Exuma Swimming Pigs. For splashing fun go to Aquaventure, a 141-acre water park with amazing slides, wave pools and other unforgettable experiences. Fort Charlotte in Nassau is living history with a moat, drawbridge, underground passageways, dungeons and 42 cannons to be explored. Hold your ears when they fire the cannon.

Barbados

The small but perfectly formed island with British roots is tremendous for families. For some pirate adventure, treat the family to a lunchtime cruise on the Jolly Roger in Bridgetown where you can say ‘ho ho ho’ amongst sails, rope swings and planks. At the Barbados Wildlife Reserve, there’s a huge range of exotic wildlife to be spotted including the unique green monkeys. Harrison’s Cave is both eerie and dramatic and the kids will enjoy it all the more on the back of a guided tram.

Whenever you choose to go to the Caribbean certainly will not disappoint!
