The term ‘tropical paradise’ is overused in the world of holidays. However, in the case of Mauritius it is the perfect description. It is not just the miles of shimmering white sands designed for beach lovers everywhere, but the interior full of exotic beauty and plenty to do for the visitor who wants to take a break from sunbathing. There are also smaller islands dotted around the main one for added interest. Here we look at the best resorts and places to visit in Mauritius if you are lucky enough to visit this gem in the Indian Ocean.

Île Aux Benitiers

Shaped like a clam, the island of Benitiers off the south of Mauritius takes the getaway in paradise to the extreme. This glorious little piece of land formed by coral is only 500 hectares but it is a beautiful place to visit for a day out. Take a stroll around the beaches and once you have completed the perimeter, settle down as the local cooks make you a grilled lunch of seafood.

Watersports are banned so you can enjoy your paradise in silence. In the middle of the island is Crystal Rock. This famed local attraction is the one place that truly demands a photograph. On your journey back from the island, wave at the friendly dolphins who form an escort for your return to the mainland.

Île aux Cerfs

On an island of wonders even the Ile aux Cerfs stands out. Crystal-clear water, coconut trees and a fine sandy beach greets the visitor as well as the island's largest lagoon. This is certainly the place where holidaying golfers will want to head with one of the world’s most beautiful courses designed by Bernard Langer overlooking amazing views of the Indian Ocean. Beginners are also welcome with golf lessons available.

Elsewhere, there are top notch restaurants and a zipline adventure for the family as well as other fun activities in the adventure park. Otherwise, stay close to the beach and enjoy water sports such as wakeboarding, speed boat rides and parasailing. It is possible to stay at a local resort and have the entire island to yourself in the evening. However, Mauritius is such an explorable island the mainland is still the best choice as a base for those who want to see and do everything.

Chamarel

Despite its glorious beaches, Mauritius’ most postcard perfect location is the Seven Coloured Earths Park in Chamarel, south of the island. It is a series of sand dunes formed from volcanic activity that have multiple, cake-like layers of colours. Go there on a bright, sunny day for spectacular images.

Whilst in the park, which is small but packed with so many treasures, there are plenty of other things to do such as zip-lining in the ebony forest. An 83 metre tall waterfall draws in the tourists and shouldn't be missed on your visit. You will spot plenty of exotic wildlife on your visit including the pink pigeon and there is even a small tortoise park which the kids will love. Chamarel is definitely a place to go when in Mauritius and Club Med can arrange a tour that means you get to see the best of what is on offer, all-inclusive.

Pamplemousse

In the north-west of Mauritius is the charming district of Pamplemousse. The main attraction is the SS Botanical Garden first constructed in the 1770s. Here you can take a walk amongst some glorious aspects of Mauritius natural history including ancient trees, lotus and a remarkable collection of water lilies. The sugar cane museum on site is also a place to explore the history of the island’s famous trade.

Pamplemousse is an option for a place to stay and the region also includes shopping, watersports and even has its own football team. Instead, make it a day trip from your Club Med base and explore the rich beauty of Mauritius before returning to your luxurious accommodation.

Grand Baie

If you are looking for somewhere to stay that is both beautiful and bustling then Grand Baie in the North West of Mauritius is ideal. The Grand Bay is one of the island’s most popular destinations thanks to its mix of old and new including a great selection of shops and restaurants, energetic nightlife, watersports and days spent lying next to its deep green waters on beautiful beaches.

Many claim this to be the best place for food on the island and, like Port Louis, every street food produced by the country is easily purchased for a delicious lunch.

This is also a place to go if planning a boat excursion with many major tours starting and finishing at the town. While there, you should also experience the very popular Solar Undersea Walk 3-4 metres below the source where you can spend a happy hour amongst coral and tropical fish. The advantage over scuba diving is that your helmet allows you to go hands-free and just focus on the wonders around you. For those who aren't great swimmers, it is the best way to get to know the local marine inhabitants.

Port Louis

Only 20km from the Club Med resort is Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius. Whilst there are other more beautiful locations to make your base (the heat, noise and pollution can be quite oppressive on some days) it is well worth investigating this fascinating city with its unique blend of tradition and modernity and home to over 200,000 people.

Mauritius’ tax haven fiscal status has attracted many big businesses from around the world looking for a place to protect their money. The harbour is the focal point for world trade and is responsible for the vast majority of the island’s commerce. It is well worth a visit just to see the ships sail in and out of the port.

After the harbour, head for the central market where every souvenir you could want is on display including local textiles, jewellery and musical instruments. It is also a great place to sample the street food and its spicy delights such as the famous roti. For a wide screen preview of the city climb up to Fort Aldelia and the old British outpost. At 240 feet the scene below you is breathtaking and one of the best places to get a camera clicking on Mauritius.

For historians, Port Louis has a variety of museums including ones covering natural history and photography. Blue Penny Museum in particular will give you a good grounding in the island’s history and culture. Other places well worth your time are are the Chinese Quarter and the Jummah Mosque which is a striking mix of architectural styles encompassing Indian, Creole and Islam.
