Turkey has long been the place ‘where east meets west’, offering western holidaymakers a taste of Asia and a glimpse into the fascinating history of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires.

Why Visit Turkey?

There are many reasons to visit Turkey, with its plethora of stunning archaeological sites, its countless civilisations that have left their mark on the country and its culture, its pristine family-friendly beaches, hundreds of natural lakes, and of course the country’s delicious cuisine melding Mediterranean and middle eastern influences to sumptuous effect.

While you’re there, you should definitely sample some of the country’s more definitive experiences, such as a Turkish steam bath or ‘hamam’, an unforgettable hot air balloon ride over the otherworldly landscape of Cappadocia, haggling for a keepsake in a bazaar or a cruise on a traditional wooden gullet ship.

The Gateway to Asia

Turkey’s capital, Istanbul, witnessed an exciting development with the Marmaray rail tunnel in the Bosphorus Strait, linking the European and Asian parts of the city. This rail line was first envisioned by an Ottoman sultan way back in 1860. It’s the first tunnel to link two continents anywhere in the world and has even been built to withstand earthquakes.

The Marmaray rail tunnel also gives tourists an easy way to cross the busy city and even provides a rail route between London and Beijing, making Turkey an excellent stop on a grand tour through Europe and Asia.
